Ten Little Rabbits is a wonderful way to introduce various Native American cultures to very young children. The pictures depict rabbits dressed in authentic clothing engaging in various activities from all around the United States and Mexico. One simple, rhyming sentence is found on each set of pages, correlating with the numbers one through ten.

This story unit includes thirteen lessons that incorporate reading, math, art, and social studies. Some lessons are appropriate for larger groups; others are for small groups or can be added to centers in the classroom. After the lessons, there is a “Supplemental Materials” section which includes photos of other books and objects along with handouts. These lessons are especially designed for preschool aged children, but also could be used in Kindergarten and Special Needs classrooms.

One important note: Before sharing with children these activities—especially the Tewa
dance—please research what would be appropriate for children to engage, especially when pulling in resources from YouTube. For example, it might be considered offensive for the children to imitate something connected to religious beliefs. This unit is committed to respecting the culture and heritage of the Native American groups depicted.
